Post subject: "Tivo Desktop is unable to contact the DVR"
Archived from groups: alt>video>ptv>tivo (more info?)

Sorry if this has been covered before, but I am going crazy with this
problem...

I have a wireless network with 2 PCs and a series 2 Tivo. All are connected
and functioning. I can ping the Tivo from both PCs, and I can play music
and view photos from both PCs on the Tivo.

On either PC when I run Tivo Desktop (v 2.2), I get the message, "There was
an error while attempting to retrieve data from the selected DVR. Tivo
Desktop is unable to contact the DVR."

I called Tivo "Support", and after talking to 3 people over the course of
almost 2 hours, I was told that it takes 72 hours from the time you change
settings to allow transfers for it to work. Needless tom say, it's been
almost 2 weeks, and still no joy. I think they just told me that to hide
the fact that they had no idea...

Things I have tried: Forcing an update from Tivo, rebooting the Tivo,
Uninstalling/reinstalling Tivo Desktop, uninstalling all
antivirus/antispyware programs, and assigning a static IP address to the
Tivo. I still can't transfer from the DVR to the PCs. Anyone have a
suggestion/solution?

Thanks,
Joe

Thanks for the suggestion - I hadn't tried that.
Unfortunately, after reentering the MAK, I still get the same message.

Also, try setting your account up at TiVo to turn off transfers, connect a
few times from the TiVos, then set it back up and connect again. Maybe the
setting is "stuck".

Well, I turned off transfers and forced a download. Now Tivo desktop tells
me "Access is denied." Tomorrow I'll turn it back on and try again.

Why wait? Go for it now.

Also, I think you can see what the setting is on your TiVo in the System
Information page.

The tivo runs an http server. Piont your web browser there and see if
it connects. If it does, try https, i think the id is tivo and the
password is your mak. If you get in with https, you can even download
there.

Well, I turned transfers back on today and forced an update. Still getting
the original error message...

When I http the tivo I get a splash screen saying "Congratulations! You've
successfully connected your Tivo box to your home network..."
When I try https (I'm ignorant of the difference and just typed in
"https:\\"IP ADDRESS"" and hit enter), I get the generic IE "the page cannot
be displayed" error.

I am truly at a loss to understand what I'm doing wrong (if anything). Has
no one out there had the same problem?

Thanks again,
Joe

Most likely something is blocking it (router, firewall, windows firewall,
virus protection, etc.)

I'm sorry, I don't know what you mean. Can you clarify/simplify/go into
greater detail?

I've disabled or uninstalled all antivirus & firewall applications. I have
a Linksys wireless B router, model BEFW11S4. I looked at the router
settings (under UPnP Forwarding) and it has http (port 80) enabled by
default, but no https (port 443). I tried to enable port 443, but it's
asking for an IP address. Do I need to enter the IP for the Tivo (tried it,
nothing happened), or the PC I want to download to, or what? Also, is it
TCP or UDP?
Thanks again,
